The Mother Hips :: 5 Albums

Posted on Tuesday 22 December 2009

hips

Known for their reverent online community and dedicated circulation of live shows, The Mother Hips are a band I grew up hearing whispers of their greatness. Indeed, the Hips are not new kids on the block of Americana and alt-country. If you’re a first time listener as I was until earlier this year, I would recommend them to those that enjoy the early output of bands like Son Volt, Black Crowes, and Widespread Panic’s eponymous album.

The Mother Hips released a brand new album called Pacific Dust a few months ago that’s carried their polished, yet distinctly unique California blend of folk straight into heavy rotation as we close out the year. Anytime I come across a new favorite, I seek out their influences, who they’ve played with, and what, if any, side projects are worth uncovering.

It’s also a fun experiment to find out what music is on their turntables and iPods. I got a brief glimpse into what Tim Bluhm (vocals/guitar) of The Mother Hips has been listening to lately for our continuing 5 Albums feature.

5 Albums :: Tim Bluhm | The Mother Hips (vocals/guitar)

Ryan Adams – Easy Tiger
I was talking to Neal Casal the other day and he said that recording that album was pretty fast and crazy. Maybe that’s what makes me love it so much.

Bob Dylan – Self Portrait
It’s been called one of his worst records. That makes me want to hear it more. It’s amazing.

Midlake – The Trials of Van Occupanther
Sometimes I can’t even imagine how people come up with the shit they come up with. Case in point.

Judee Sill – Heart Food
A re-issue from the early 70′s. The backstory makes these songs even more powerful.

Dennis Wilson – Pacific Ocean Blue
Another re-issue from the 70′s. For Beach Boys freaks this is simply more of the best side of it all. Dennis was the quintessential California rock star. There was no way he could grow old.

Buy: The Mother Hips – Pacific Dust
MP3: The Mother Hips – “White Falcon Fuzz”
MP3: The Mother Hips – “All In Favor”
