6/19 - Charlie Louvin - The Heartland Café

Wow! This is my birthday. The Heartland Café is a great place with allot of history both for Chicago and me personally. The Heartland is just North of where the No Exit Café used to be. The No Exit Café was an original beatnik coffee house that survived for decades before Starbucks put most independent coffee houses out of business.

The Heartland is a true original vegetarian Hippie place. My dad was no hippie, but we kept kosher and he could bring me there for lunch without fear of pork or meat & milk mingling. The Heartland is in a Neighborhood called Rogers Park. This is the neighborhood my parents met each other for the first time. My Grandmother, Sally Levin, who was a well respected Chicago Jewish poet, lived and owned property there for many years.

It was strange as a child being in this Hippie enclave with my Conservative Jewish Dad and his tough Yiddisha Mamma. And now Charlie Louvin is playing there on my birthday!

Wow!, I live in LA now. My grandmother died many years ago. My father still lives in Chicago, it has been many years since just my dad and I went to lunch period, let alone at the Heartland.

For me Charlie Louvin playing the Heartland on my birthday represents so many nice intersecting points of history, and I won’t even be there! It is just one more very small example of how great music, and the blending of cultures can be for a society.

So on this day when the fruits of Warmongers are coming to bare and pushing people into soul wrenching decisions and alliances…On this day when bombs and bullets are killing little innocent children on both sides of every battle. Let us remember that “Respect is Evil’s only Prevention”. If a giant of an art form spawned from the Confederacy can feel at home in this Northern Hippie hang out frequented by Kosher keeping Jews, then many historical differences between people can be healed over time.

Come and listen to my tunes @ myspace.com/andrewdlevin, peace and happy new year!
